FOR SALE I just completed my first official ACEO. For those of you who aren't familiar, the acronym "ACEO" stands for Art Cards, Editions and Originals. They can be original art, print editions or photographs that measure 2-1/2" x 3-1/2". Artists trade them (ATCs) and people collect them. I think they are a fun way to explore different ideas and mediums in a miniature format. For the collector, its a great way to own a variety of original artist's work at very affordable prices. The room doesn't have a lot of visual stimulation besides a row of chairs so I normally just sit with my iPad and read. I decided that instead of drawing the obvious shoe that I would go for something that would challenge me. I suppose a scarf is just as obvious and straight forward of an answer to the challenge but it was something that would challenge me personally. I envy artists who have the patience to draw beautiful fabric folds. My brain goes in all sorts of directions and my hand follows in it's overly energetic fashion as if it had a mind of it's own.

Rebecca Stahr – © copyright 2011 Everyday Matters Group Drawing Challenge - #303 - Draw something frozen. We just had a couple of inches of snow fall yesterday so I tried to capture the snow on the neighbors house as well as in the bush that is in front of the window. I wish I could capture that bush better...it looks like a bunch of giant cotton balls got stuck in the evergreen needles. This year to challenge my sketchbook drawing, I have decided to participate in the weekly challenges from an online group I have been following for a while. The Everyday Matters group posts weekly creative challenges that it's members share with others in the group as they are completed. I am looking forward to actively participating in this group and stretching my creativity even further this year.

Unfortunately the sketchbooks they gave us to sketch in have pretty thin paper and so you can see sketches from other pages showing through. It makes it very hard to get a good scan. Pencil is a very hard medium to scan to begin with. I try the trick of putting a black piece of paper behind the art when scanning to help balance it out but a lot of detail still gets lost unfortunately.

Rebecca Stahr – © copyright 2010 Yesterday we took my son downtown to LegoKidsFest 2010. It is amazing what people do with legos and get paid for it. I believe the title is " Master Builder" and you get to wear a red lab coat. I have to say there were some pretty cool things for them to do there. One of my favorites was the lego mystery mural that was being built. They had square tiles that had different colored dots that the kids affixed the corresponding colored legos to and then brought them to this giant board. On the backs of the squares were numbers and where the numbers matched the giant lego wall is where your square went. The result was a giant mosaic picture in progress. At various points, us tired and weary parents would sit down and rest while our kids were busy at would building and playing with whatever the next exhibit happened to be. These opportunities turned out to be great sketching opportunities. I will say though, toward the end, even I was too tired to lift my pen. It was a great day for all involved though.

Rebecca Stahr – © copyright 2010 I just tested out my new Sakura Koi Water Colors Sketch Box and I am in love. This is a great traveling watercolor set that comes with 24 assorted half pan colors, a medium size water brush, sponges and an adjustable mixing palette. I am new to water brushes and I now wonder how I ever did without one. What an awesome way to do traveling sketches and have a portable palette right there. I can't wait to go and try it on my next sketchbook outing.

I've been watching the mailbox in anticipation of the arrival of my sketchbook package from art house co-op for The Sketchbook Project: 2011. My sketchbook category is coffee and cigarettes and I have been pondering the approach I am going to take. This of course is going to take extensive research and lots of caffeine in the presence of various coffee houses in the area. It's a tough job, but somebody is gonna have to do it. It is after all for the sake of documentation for future generations. If you happen to see me any time before the deadline next January...ignore the jitter.

We were having fun at the drive-in... until the fog rolled in. My son was highly disappointed when we left after the first movie and didn't get to see Iron Man 2.

For instance, I am starving because I haven't eaten my breakfast yet (still haven't by the way) and as I am cutting up a bowl of fresh berries the sparkle of the color of the freshly washed berries catches my eye. Of course I can't eat them now... I have to draw them first. Does your creativity ever consume you to the point you have to act on it NOW? Do you ever find yourself so caught up in your work that a whole day could go by and you realize you haven't even bothered to stop and eat? Creativity sure is a demanding creature sometimes. I've fed my little creativity monster for the moment... now back to me. Where are those berries?

He still brings me flowers...

After what has been a long crazy week, my husband came home from work last night with flowers. Not just any flowers mind you but "sushi flowers". Aren't these amazing? Wouldn't you feel special if your special someone showed up with these? I love unusual things and I have never seen a flower arrangement so unique. The arrangement is made of an orchid and a rose with another small sprig of greenery as well as some berries and wired beading. These are wrapped with a long leaf and paired in a dish of water. I love orchids and this artsy arrangement made me feel so special. He did fess up and say that he had asked for some help from his executive assistant. That's okay, I give him the credit for being smart and caring enough to do so and therefore, he still scored big in my eyes. These came from a great florist in the Park Ridge, IL area called Kiko's Flower and Gifts. Obviously, I give them two thumbs up them.

I am looking forward to some summertime fun...

I've got a new one started on the drawing board. I think the nicer weather has influenced my decision to pick this picture from the inspiration pile. It was taken at a family birthday party last July. I can almost feel the beautiful sunny day when this picture was taken. I tend to emotionally wrap myself into my drawings as I do them and I smile as I think about watching my son having fun with the bubbles while his cousin kept trying to pop them on him. He was getting kind of annoyed with her because he could hardly get them blown and she already was there to break them. (I guess you can't really blame him. He wanted to see them fly.) I can still hear her giggles of delight as the bubbles engulfed her and she spun around trying to get every last one.

My poor boy... He gets sick and I get out the sketchbook. It's about the only time anymore that he will sit still for me long enough to study him anymore even if it is only between the ten or so times he has vomited since 4am.

Why I blog...

This coming year is turning out to be a major milestone in my life as an artist and in many other aspects of my life. I am moving ahead with the "no looking back" attitude that will either take me or break me and am preferring the prior of the two options. Either way, this is going to be a year of stretching, learning and discovery. As part of this commitment to my future goals, I have decided to take an online blogging class given by one of my favorite blogs ArtBizBlog.com by blogger and art coach Alyson Stanfield and Cynthia Morris who is the blogger at journeyjuju.com and orginalimpulseblog.com. I have now committed to a 4-week Blog Triage Class. At the start of this class, of course, is the base question from which all else comes...Why do I blog and who am I hoping to be blogging for? So here it is...

Why do I blog?

I had initially decided to start blogging as a new creativity and accountability tool for myself. I have the discipline of keeping both a journal and a sketchbook and thought that posting some of my sketches online would keep me accountable to my art in some way. Both the journal and sketchbook are what I use to give my creativity a place to grow and find a voice. They are very different from the refined finish drawings that represent me as an artist. We all have the polished exterior that we carefully present to the world, but in showing these glimpses of art that I normally would be hesitant to share because they aren't the perfect finished pieces, I hope to create that personal human connection that touches each of us in some way when we come in contact with another's soul being bared. Through sharing my thoughts and sketches I hope to give those who enjoy my art a deeper sense of who I am as a person and what drives my creativity. Further, I hope to give inspiration to other artists as they do to me when I admire their work. I also hope to give those I have done commissioned work for a greater sense of what I go through in the process of creating something unique and valuable to them. I always say being an artist is a little bit like being a surrogate mother. You go through the emotional ups and downs, the preparation and birthing, but in the end your ultimate joy comes from giving that joy to someone else. My hope is that my blog reflects that.

No Looking Back Now...

I have come to the conclusion that you can't move fully and successfully forward without releasing your grip on the past. I have this vision of myself hanging between two ropes and not moving forward or backward because I don't want to let go of either. It is that visualization that made me realize it is time to move on. I am in the process of winding down my web design/development business and releasing that grip is a little scary. I have spent many years working hard to cultivate strong business relationships and a successful business and it is hard to release the known to move on into the unknown. For a while I thought about the prospect of continuing my existing business while starting the non-profit HeART Touch Outreach and all the while trying to feed my passion for my art. You can't be a slave to two masters and in the end my art always was the one to suffer. Why was I putting aside my passion for something that was ultimately just a paycheck and not my true calling? I'm not the type of person who dreams in coding languages...though it would sometimes keep me up at night. I am an artist...an artist who happened to be good at writing code too...yet still down to the core an artist. So now the time has come. Our goal is to have the tax legalities filed and approved so we can move forward by Mother's Day. That being said, I am in the process of finishing up my current obligations with existing clients and will be notifying others of the changes. I am finding it hard to say no to those I have worked hard to help make their business efforts successful. I just need to keep in mind that it is now my turn to make my dreams a success too.

My son and his Dad were outside building a family of snowmen when all of the sudden there was a knock at the back door. My little master snowman builder had a mitten full of dead echinacea flower seed heads in his hand and wanted me to open the door... "I picked these for you." My heart melted.

For the longest time I have been searching for a way to make a difference with my artistic talents. I feel everyone has a unique contribution to give through their talents and for me identifying what that was has been a long, soul-searching journey. It wasn't enough to just have that inner-longing and passion to create. I wanted it to make a difference in the lives of others. Through a series of events, including the honor of completing a portrait for a woman whose sister passed away during the process of completing the drawing of her, I came to realize the unbelievable joy it gave me to give such a unique and special memory. I seem to have a heart that overflows with compassion for the hurting and this really felt like a blessing to do this for her. Because of this intense desire to reach out to those in need, my husband and I have decided to start a non-profit that works through grief support groups for parents who have lost a child (or are close to losing theirs) to provide these grieving parents with a gift of a drawing/portrait of their child. The name we have selected for the non-profit is HeART Touch Outreach. We have filed a trademark/service mark application for the name and articles of incorporation with the State of Illinois. We are currently drafting bylaws, have secured the URLs and have a draft of a logo started. It is a great labor of love and we can't wait to get up and running with it. I know that I am but one person and will probably only be able to deliver about 12-15 of these drawing gifts a year, along with doing my commissioned portraits, but I want to be used by God for a higher good to make the world a better place in my own small way. If everyone used their unique, God-given talents to do just a little to help those in need, imagine the possibilities...

One day, an old man was walking along the beach in the early morning and noticed what appeared to be thousands of starfish washed up on the shore. Up ahead in the distance, he spotted a boy who appeared to be gathering up the starfish and tossing them, one by one, back into the ocean. Overwhelmed by the sheer multitude of the suffering creatures, the old man just stood and watched as the boy picked up another starfish, and yet another, releasing them in the healing safety of the cool green water.

Finally, he approached the boy and asked him why he spent so much energy doing what seemed to be a waste of time. The boy replied, "If these starfish are left out here like this, they will bake in the sun, and by this afternoon all of them will be dead." The old man gazed out as far as he could see and responded, "But, there must be hundreds of miles of beach and thousands of starfish. You can't possibly rescue all of them. What difference is throwing a few back going to make, anyway?"

The boy then held up the starfish he had in his hand and threw it to safety in the waves and replied, "It made a difference to that one!"

My son loves bugs. What boy doesn't. We have been watching some cool stuff on animal planet and they really are amazing, gross and outright brutal. Did you know that when a fly lands on your food it vomits on it before it sucks it up through it's strawlike mouth...like I said gross stuff. This morning we were reading an insect book and I was captivated by the details and colors of these tiny creatures. Needless to say, as soon as I dropped the boy off at school I grabbed my sketchbook and started drawing. Too bad the library book goes back by Friday. I might just have to visit a book store and get a bug book of my own.

Why do we teach our children art doesn't matter...

— The Art of Teaching Art to Children I am facinated with children's artistic development and creativity. I recently did a career day demonstation to a class of young children. As much as the thought of a large group of small children outnumbering me makes me shake in my shoes far more than a business presentation in front of a meeting of executives, I did it anyhow. I did it because I want children to understand that art is a real career and something that can be taken seriously. Even if a child doesn't necessarily have an interest in the arts, I do feel it is critical to their development and it is sad that so little serious attention is given to it in school anymore. I have too often heard growing up that I had better have a backup plan. Or make sure to study something more practical such as graphic design. As much as I am the free-spirited artist there is a small part of me that took that advice and though I did go to art school, I studied design as well as fine arts. Honestly, I regret that choice. You can't squelch a fire that is burning deep within a person's entire being. If only I had someone who supported me and told me to go for it. Even my high school art teacher, as inspiring and supportive as he was pushed me in the direction of the graphic arts. While I have been successful at keeping a dual existence of fine artist-commercial artist, it does make a person feel torn in two directions. This new decade is going to be a new direction for me and I am really looking forward to it. Lastly, to all the little budding artists out there, go for it... I'm planning on taking my own advice too.

Recently my son has entered a new phase of development in his drawing. He has started to copy the way I sit and sketch and it is adorable. Instead of drawing from his imagination, he actually sits and draws his surroundings. I tend to be very sketchy when I am doing quick sketches from life and he even imitates that with his line work. I love watching kids draw and seeing their mind and imagination working. I am looking forward to many more sketch outings with my boy.

It's that time of year again. A time of reflection and of anticipation of the future coming year. I always wonder why people wait until a whole year goes by to regroup and take a fresh look at their life. I tend to get caught up in that thought process too. Maybe it is the daunting process of preparing for taxes that forces me to think that way. If you think about it though, isn't every day a fresh new start. A gift of a new day with new opportunities. This year as every year I am making my plans on what I would like to accomplish artistically but one of the things I am vowing to do is to stop letting the "Someday Syndrome" rob me of today. I am going to enjoy the artistic process new each day and not worry about where it will take me someday.

This image is one of my all time favorite sketches of mine. My husband and I fondly refer to our son as "The Boy". The Boy has his special bear that has been with him since the day he was born. "Bear" has now been replaced with Star Wars and Nintendo DS. Time goes by so fast and this picture will always be special to me.
